How Axolotl Genetics Work

Axolotl color is controlled by four main genes, each with dominant and recessive alleles. A morph only appears when the axolotl has two copies of the recessive allele (homozygous recessive).

D gene

Controls melanophore density (leucistic)

A gene

Removes melanin (albino/copper)

M gene

Increases melanophores (melanoid)

Ax gene

Removes yellow (axanthic)

Note: This calculator provides simplified predictions. Real genetics involve additional modifiers, and het status may be unknown. For precise predictions, know the parents' full genetic history.
