Axolotls are medium-sized amphibians that grow steadily during their first 18-24 months of life. Understanding their growth stages helps you plan tank size, feeding, and expectations.

Adult Size

• Average adult length: 20-25 cm (8-10 inches)
• Maximum length: 30+ cm (12+ inches)
• Body width: 3-5 cm at widest point
• Weight: 150-300 grams (average adult)

Males tend to be slightly longer and slimmer, while females are often shorter but wider-bodied, especially when carrying eggs.

Growth Chart by Age

Growth rates vary significantly between individuals. Some axolotls reach 20 cm by 8 months, while others take over a year.

Factors That Affect Growth

Diet: the biggest controllable factor. Axolotls fed a varied, protein-rich diet (earthworms + pellets) grow faster and larger than those on a limited diet.

Temperature: warmer water (within safe range) speeds up metabolism and growth. Axolotls at 20°C grow faster than those at 16°C, but the cooler temperature is better for long-term health.

Tank size: while a small tank does not physically prevent growth, the associated water quality issues and stress can stunt growth. Always provide adequate space.

Genetics: some bloodlines simply produce larger or smaller axolotls. This is the factor you have the least control over.

When Is an Axolotl Full Grown?

Most axolotls reach their full adult size between 18 and 24 months of age. After this point, growth slows dramatically, though they may continue to fill out slightly over the following years.

An axolotl is generally considered “full grown” when:
